Briard

The Briard or Berger de Brie is a huge shepherd dog breed which originated in France. They are herders distinguished by their impressive heads topped by peek-a-boo hairstyles parted naturally down the center. Their wavy coats come in either gray, tawny, or black. Briards are hefty and tough, but they walk with quick feet. They share characteristics with many other herders, including trainability, intelligence, a protective attitude toward family, and wariness of strangers. They are huge, tenacious dogs, and inexperienced owners may find their work ethic and zeal for life overwhelming.

Males measure 23 to 27 inches in height, while females measure 22 to 25.5 inches. The usual weight range is 55 to 100 pounds.

The Briard is overall a healthy breed, with the average life expectency being from 12 years.

The Briard has its roots in France and dates to the eighth century. His nickname, the Chien Berger De Brie, is thought to have come from the province of Brie, where he was born. The Briard is a close relative of the smooth-coated Beauceron, another French pasture breed.

The breed can be traced to the Emperor Charlemagne because to early tapestries that feature his likeness. The Briard was the official breed of the French Army and has also been linked to Napoleon. The first Briards are thought to have been brought to the country by Thomas Jefferson. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1928.
