The Dutch Shepherd – A Jack of All Trades

Longhaired Adult Dutch Shepherd

The Dutch Shepherd is a landrace breed that originated in the Netherlands and was recognized as a distinct breed in 1898.

Originally used by shepherds in the Netherlands for all-around farm work, the Dutch Shepherd is an intelligent, rustic, all-around farm dog that can still herd sheep just as it did at the beginning of the breed. In modern times, they find jobs in police work and as farm dogs and active family companions.

Dutch Shepherds come in three different varieties. The most common would be the short hair, then the long hair, and rough hair. The latter two are much less common. Although they are registered as one breed, we do not cross the varieties. Under the coat, all three varieties should look the same.

In training the Dutch Shepherd, those new to the breed may find them a bit stubborn. Nevertheless, this is simply due to their intelligence, independence, and their love of having fun. Training should be firm but never harsh or compulsive. Those who love the breed find them to be able partners in almost any fun activity, including dog shows and dog sports.

As we move forward with full recognition, we hope to see this wonderful rare breed have a bright future in dog shows and dog sports, on farms, in police and protection work, and in some cases, service work.

The Dutch Shepherd is still a rare breed; finding a purebred isn’t always a fast process. There are approximately 10,000 Shorthaired Dutch Shepherds, 1,400 Longhaired, and the Roughhaired has the smallest number with around 500 worldwide. But good things come to those who wait—and they are well worth the wait.
