The American Kennel Club Reacts to the Movie ‘Show Dogs’

The following is a statement issued by our friends at the American Kennel Club concerning the new movie “Show Dogs”.

“While the American Kennel Club is pleased that attention is being paid to dog shows, we are deeply concerned about the message the movie “Show Dogs,” released May 18th by Global Road Entertainment, is sending to the public.  The movie is not an accurate depiction of our sport or its participants. The conformation dog show is a time honored sport in our country and should not be tied to any form of animal smuggling, comical or otherwise. Additionally,  the movie and its website improperly and inaccurately messages to audiences that the breeds depicted in the movie can be easily found in local animal shelters as a push to encourage adoption. This is misleading. Purebred dogs are not easily found in in animal shelters, in fact, less than 5% of dogs in shelters are purebred, according to recent studies.

The AKC respects the right of potential dog owners to obtain their pet in any responsible manner they see fit. However, if they are in search of a specific breed and have the desire to rescue, the appropriate action would be to find a breed-specific rescue organization. Doing so, enables the owner to give a deserving canine companion a home and find the breed that best fits their lifestyle. For more information on recues or to find one to support, please visit AKC.org.”
