Agility Is a Team Sport: Lakeland Terriers Find Focus Through Partnerships
When a terrier lacks focus in Agility, many attribute it to them “just being a terrier.” At times, that could be true, but let’s face it, that’s why we all love terriers, and more often than not it is a reflection of our training. Some might think it is an arduous task to be able to focus a terrier with all those distractions, but if you approach training properly, terriers love the game of Agility.

Agility is a team sport, where the handler directs their dog around an obstacle course. It is both good exercise and an exhilarating activity for handlers of all ages. The American Kennel Club (AKC) has excellent Agility programs, ranging from scholarship opportunities for Juniors to international competitions for Juniors and Seniors (over 55 years old).
Although Agility is a timed sport where the fastest time wins, at the highest levels of the sport you must also complete the course without errors. Not only do you need to run it error-free, and off-leash, but there are many distractions that your dog needs to ignore. For example, the trial could be outside, might be in a horse arena, or could have multiple side-by-side rings with different teams running, and barking, concurrently.
A great deal of training goes into having an Agility partner, both for the skills of the sport and for the relationship between dog and handler. The dog must remain focused, and take cues from the handler, regardless of these distractions.
Foundation work starts as puppies, making sure to do only age-appropriate activities, like impulse control games. This is also the start of the bond between the dog and the handler. If you don’t put enough time into establishing the bond, you may constantly lose the battle to all the distractions that surround your dog at performance trials.

Lakies, as Lakeland Terriers are affectionately called, are very intelligent and have a strong work ethic. If channeled properly, their drive is what makes them excellent canine partners in any activity, especially Agility. Lakelands are competitive and can excel at the top levels of the sport. Lakeland Terriers have been showcased running Agility on Fox and ESPN during trials at The Westminster Kennel Club Masters Agility Championship, AKC National Agility Championship, AKC Agility Invitational, and AKC Premier Cup over the past several years, and have also achieved the highest Agility title in AKC Agility: Agility Grand Champion.
So, what are you waiting for? Get off the couch, grab some toys and treats, and have fun with your Lakie! You will be rewarded when you see the joy in your dog’s eyes as they play the game with you!
