David L. Anthony says that, being born and raised in the rural Northwest Pennsylvania oil patch, you never paid for a dog. “You went to a house with a box of nondescript puppies and picked out one,” he explains. David was never one to concede to the normal process. As an avid upland bird hunter of only 14 years of age, he purchased a purebred Brittany. Several years later, he was the proud owner of an Irish Setter. Fast forward to 1982, David found the love of his life, his lovely wife, Deborah. She introduced David to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, which became their favorite breed for life. Under the kennel name Dragonpatch, together they have finished multiple champions and have enjoyed success in the Group ring with some outstanding examples. The couple even imported several examples from New Zealand in an effort to introduce some features that they felt were lacking in their breeding program. David and Deborah both now judge the Herding and Non-Sporting Groups, and have enjoyed adjudicating at all-breed shows, regional specialties, and multiple national specialties. However, the most significant honor David received was judging the Cardigan National in Portland, Oregon. David was the contributing author for the AKC Gazette Cardigan breed column for five years and led the CWCCA’s Judge’s Education Committee during the same time frame. David and Deborah continue to exhibit and breed in order to stay grounded to the core of purebred dogs. “It was described that Cardigans are not our hobby; they are our lifestyle,” David notes.
