Interview with Dawn L. Martin | 2024 MCKC Breed Judge

1. What does it mean to be invited to judge at one of the most important dog shows in the world—Montgomery?

Dawn L. Martin: It was certainly an honor and privilege. I enjoyed every moment in the ring with my No. 1 chosen breed, the West Highland White Terrier. It was a wonderful experience.

2. Can you share your thoughts on your Breed assignment? Please be specific.

Dawn L. Martin: One would need to go back to 1976 with CH Ardenrun Andsome Of Purston winning the last Best in Show by a West Highland White Terrier, followed in 1988 by CH Skaket’s Candy Man CDX TD placing 2nd in the Group from the Veteran class.

2024 – GCHB CH Elvador Starlight Goblet Of Fire was a joy to go over, with everything in the right places, from his lovely head, hard white coat, flat and level topline, body compact and of good substance, with defined forechest and buttocks. His movement was free and easy, with a gait that was powerful—and he was moved on a loose lead! A grand dog, which I was thrilled to send to the Group, where he went Reserve Best in Show in a beautiful line-up.

3. In your opinion, what does the future hold for the Terrier Breeds in America and around the world?

Dawn L. Martin: The breed is in good condition, with depth of quality in the classes and the specials. All of the dogs remaining in my ring where good representatives of the breed. The future is bright for the West Highland White Terrier.
