Interview With Deirdre Petrie – 2025 National Dog Show Toy Group Judge

Can you describe your reaction to receiving an invitation to judge the Toy Group at this year’s National Dog Show Presented by Purina?

Deirdre Petrie: I was absolutely thrilled! It is truly a privilege to be invited to judge at such a prestigious event. Receiving the invitation was both exciting and deeply meaningful.

What does it mean to judge a Group at this historic show?

Deirdre Petrie: Being asked to judge a Group here is an honor I genuinely treasure. I’m grateful for the confidence the Kennel Club of Philadelphia placed in me by inviting me to participate in their renowned event.

In your opinion, how does this show differ from other AKC events?

Deirdre Petrie: The Kennel Club of Philadelphia hosts one of only two benched shows in the entire country, which makes it truly special. This event is uniquely welcoming to families—it allows the public to meet breeders, learn about different breeds, and experience purebred dogs up close. The gate is unmatched; I learned attendance was up 12 percent this year. At a time when some shows are declining and public misconceptions like “adopt, don’t shop” are common, a show like this is essential for educating the public and celebrating purebred dogs.

What were you thinking or feeling moments before you stepped into the center of the Group ring?

Deirdre Petrie: It was emotional at first. I couldn’t help but think of my dad, who always said, “I can’t wait to see you judge on TV.” I lost him a few years ago, so that moment carried a lot of meaning. But the emotion quickly turned into excitement as the Toy dogs entered the ring. Although I felt a few nerves, once I began judging, I settled into my zone and focused completely on the dogs. Despite the packed crowd—every seat filled and people standing ten deep—I hardly noticed the crowd once I started judging.

Was there a heightened energy coming from the dog and handler teams? Did you feel any excitement from the spectators?

Deirdre Petrie: The atmosphere was electric! Spectators were fully engaged and cheered enthusiastically for their favorites. The handlers looked like they were enjoying every minute, and every dog seemed to be performing at its absolute best.

How challenging was this assignment? Can you share your selection process?

Deirdre Petrie: The biggest challenge was not having enough ribbons to give out. Even during my initial cut, I had to leave out some truly outstanding dogs—some of whom I’ve placed in previous Groups before. The quality was exceptional. My selection process focused on identifying which dogs best exemplified their Breed Standard and which ones were truly “on” that day and asking for the win.

Do you have a word or two about your Group winner? About the dogs that placed?

Group 1 – Shih Tzu

He entered the ring as if he owned it. This gorgeous dog perfectly embodies the Standard—“proud of bearing, with a distinctively arrogant carriage.” When he gaits, he gives off the impression that he is thinking, “I don’t know why the rest of you bothered to show up.”

Group 2 – Miniature Pinscher

A beautifully balanced bitch with the correct hackney-like action. She was elegant, correct, and impressive.

Group 3 – Pomeranian

Immaculately groomed and beautifully presented. A square dog in a round circle—truly charming and typey.

Group 4 – Havanese

Another exquisitely presented dog. He is a natural showman who clearly loves being in the ring. He held his correct topline at all times and displayed the unique springy gait that is so characteristic of the breed.

This show has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition in America. Are there specific ways in which this show furthers the cause of purebred dogs?

Deirdre Petrie: Absolutely—it plays a vital role. This show is designed for the public, not just exhibitors, and that is exactly what purebred dog fanciers need right now. Visitors can meet breeders, learn about dozens of breeds, discover areas of the dog fancy they may not have known about, and even shop for unique dog-related items. The Thanksgiving Day broadcast provides an additional opportunity to educate millions of viewers. The Kennel Club of Philadelphia also makes generous donations to dog-related charities, which benefits the entire community.

Is there anything you’d like to say to the members of the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and the show’s sponsors?

Deirdre Petrie: THANK YOU! Every club officer, member, ring steward, superintendent, and AKC rep went out of their way to make this a special experience for all the judges. This show is first-class in every way, and I’m truly honored to have been part of it. A special thanks to Show Chair Frank DePaulo for his dedication and hard work, and to all who supported him.
