AKC Miscellaneous Class is comprised of all of the dog breeds that cannot be placed into any of the other AKC approved group categories. Dog Breeds that can currently compete in the Miscellaneous Class are still enrolled with the AKC Foundation Stock Service. Until the breed is accepted for regular status by the AKC Board of Directors, FSS enrollment is maintained. Authorities acknowledge that there are several hundred different purebred dog breeds worldwide, not all of which are AKC-recognized breeds. The American Kennel Club Stud Book lists those who have been authorized for AKC registration. The AKC offers a path for a new breed’s development that is predictable and may lead to the breed’s full recognition and appearance in the official Stud Book as an AKC recognized breed.
