Interview With Natalie Halfacre – 2025 Kennel Club of Philadelphia Best Junior Handler
1. Congratulations, Natalie, on your Best Junior Handler win at the 2025 Kennel Club of Philadelphia! Is it a dream come true?
Natalie Halfacre: Thank you so much! Winning Best Junior Handler at the Kennel Club of Philadelphia (still) feels incredibly surreal. Not only was it a dream come true, it was a personal goal of mine, which made it all the more special.
2. How was the overall experience of being at the Philadelphia show for you? Were you busy all weekend?
Natalie Halfacre: The whole weekend was packed, but in the best way possible. Between working, grooming, practicing, and supporting friends, there was always something happening. The energy at the Philadelphia show is incredible, and being surrounded by so many talented handlers and amazing dogs made it unforgettable.
3. Who was the first person you called or texted after you’d won?
Natalie Halfacre: I immediately texted my family group chat. My mom always texts them when I’ve won, so once I got hold of my phone after the excitement of winning I saw that, even though some of them couldn’t be there in person, they were cheering just as loudly from home.
4. How have you celebrated your victory? Did you and your dog enjoy a special meal that night?
Natalie Halfacre: I won Best Junior on Sunday, so I was able to celebrate with my family when I got home! My dog, Cen, certainly enjoyed one (or three) of his favorite snacks.
5. You’ve shown several different dogs in Juniors. How did you choose which dog to show this year?
Natalie Halfacre: I’ve been able to show some amazing dogs while in Juniors, and each one has expanded my skill set. This year, I chose to work with a Springer because I love their versatility and attitude. Springers are smart, willing, and they have this natural enthusiasm that makes them fun to handle. Working with the breed challenges me in a good way, and I feel like I have matured into really highlighting the breed’s strengths in the ring.
6. What does your dog mean to you now that you share this win together?
Natalie Halfacre: We’ve spent so much time training, traveling, and learning together… this moment really shows how strong our partnership has become.
7. How has Junior Handling made a difference in your life? In your family’s life?
Natalie Halfacre: Junior Handling has made a huge difference in my life. It’s taught me confidence, responsibility, and how to stay calm under pressure. It’s also given me a community and friendships I wouldn’t have found anywhere else. For my family, it’s created some of my favorite memories with them! They’ve supported me at every show.
8. Would you like to say a few words about this year’s judge? To your competitors?
Natalie Halfacre: It was an honor to be awarded Best Junior under judge Miss Morgan Miller. I appreciated how organized and engaging her ring was. The instructions were clear, and it made the process really enjoyable. The competition was incredibly tough, everyone’s clear dedication to this sport is so amazing to see. Especially since some of these Juniors are going to be the future of our sport.
9. Can you offer any advice to Juniors looking to compete at next year’s Kennel Club of Philadelphia and the National Dog Show?
Natalie Halfacre: The biggest piece of advice I have for the Juniors coming to next year’s shows is to not get too wound up in winning or losing. It’s so easy to focus on ribbons, placements, and outcomes, but the truth is, that mindset can take the joy out of the experience. What really matters is learning, growing, and enjoying the time you get to spend with your dog. When you let go of the pressure to be perfect, you handle better, your dog relaxes, and the whole day becomes a lot more fun. Focus on doing your best, appreciating the journey, and celebrating the little victories—because those are what actually build you as a competitor and as a team.
10. What’s next for Natalie Halfacre?
Natalie Halfacre: Next for me is just continuing to work toward my goals and finishing high school! I’m excited for the new experiences and opportunities ahead, and I want to make the most of this next chapter while still focusing on growing and learning along the way.
