Interview with Clay Coady – AKC National Championship 2023 Best in Show Judge

Can you describe your reaction to receiving an invitation to judge Best in Show at the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin?

Clay Coady: It was an extraordinary honor and thrill. At the same time, it was humbling; one of those moments that makes you understand the privilege and responsibility of judging one of the most prestigious dog events in the world.

What does it mean to head the judging panel at the only all-breed show organized directly by the American Kennel Club?

Clay Coady: Because of the dedication of the AKC staff, you know the show is going to be run exceedingly well and that the size and quality of the entry will be exceptional. The idea that it is the only all-breed show organized by the AKC is just icing on the cake.

In your opinion, how does this show differ from other AKC events?

Clay Coady: The difference is in the details. The venue, including the size of the rings, the footing, and the lighting, is the best imaginable for judges and exhibitors. The flow and organization of all the elements of a great show come together seamlessly to make it an ideal place to judge dogs. It’s also great for spectators to view and compare dogs for breeding stock in the future. The history and experience of the amazing AKC staff is apparent every step of the way.

What were you thinking or feeling moments before you stepped into the center of the BIS ring?

Clay Coady: I was thinking, “This is not going to be easy. I hope I don’t fall!”

Was there a heightened energy coming from the dog and handler teams? Did you feel the energy of the spectators?

Clay Coady: Not one dog or handler made a mistake. You could tell they prepared for months for this one important and exhilarating moment. And I definitely felt the energy from the spectators.

How challenging was this assignment? Can you share your selection process?

Clay Coady: It was much more challenging than I thought it would be. I’m serious when I say all seven dogs deserved to be in that ring and were serious contenders for the top spot. The Group judges did a great job sending me the best of the best. My selection process is always the same: breed type, breed-specific movement and character, then conditioning and presentation. At any and every level, we are evaluating breeding stock. On this celebrated day, I had the great privilege of evaluating some of the best breeding stock in the world.

Do you have a word or two about your Best in Show winner? About the Group winners?

Clay Coady: When I walked up to the Shih Tzu, I was taken by what a beautiful, broad, round head and expression he has. When I went over him, I was impressed with how well everything fit together. He is so correct everywhere… then the tail and the “big back porch.” All of that, combined with his presence, distinct carriage, and flowing double coat, made him more than complete in my eyes.

The quality of every one of the Group winners showcased the lifetime of dedication of their breeders, and the hard work and talent of those who prepared and presented these sensational dogs.

In today’s world, it’s very difficult to get a venue that fits everybody’s needs—and it takes a lot of money if one is even available. Royal Canin’s presence is done in great taste and blends in beautifully with the style and mission of the event. Their partnership is key to the success of the event. And I cannot say enough about the AKC staff, from the show committee to the support staff.

A dog show of this magnitude is a monumental undertaking. Is there anything you’d like to say on behalf of the AKC and the show’s sponsors?

Clay Coady: Again, the organization, the ring size, lighting, and footing are all very good examples of how a show should be put on. You have to remember they have full-time jobs keeping the AKC operating day-to-day; to also commit their time and effort to put on this world-class event is a great reflection of their dedication and work ethic.

Are there specific ways in which this show furthers the cause of purebred dogs?

Clay Coady: The mere fact that it is televised and is sponsored by Royal Canin and the American Kennel Club brings a lot of attention to purebred dogs for the benefit of the general public. The extra footage added to the final broadcast, and the corresponding social media before and after the show, is an excellent way to promote purebred dogs and the human-canine bond.

Now that it’s over, what are your thoughts on the 2023 show year? Any thoughts on the year ahead?

You hear a lot about how there are not as many good breeders as yesteryear, but you wouldn’t know it if you watched this year’s Groups and Best in Show. In the years that I’ve been involved in this sport, things have only gotten better.
