Interview With David Kittredge – 2025 Morris & Essex Kennel Club Breed Judge – Cocker Spaniels, Vizslas
1. What does it mean to be invited to judge at the 2025 Morris & Essex Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Show, an unrivaled celebration of purebred dogs in America?
David Kittredge: When I attended the first modern-day Morris & Essex show in 2000, the special quality of the event immediately hit me, and I know I wasn’t alone. It was a magical day, blessed with a huge entry, people stepping up to dress in wonderful retro styles, and an overall ambience and feeling of camaraderie that I had never before experienced at a dog show. Since then I have attended all but one, as a spectator and steward, and have always come away with the same feeling. When invited to judge at this year’s event, it was truly a dream come true. Let me just say, the day didn’t disappoint!
2. Can you share your thoughts on your Breed assignment(s)? Please be specific.
David Kittredge: I can definitely say I was really pleased with my Breed assignments. Of course, judging your own breed (Cocker Spaniel) is always exciting, and the addition of a second breed (Vizsla), which has always been one of my favorites, was the icing on the cake. On the day, the exhibits were worthy examples of both breeds, with good depth from which to make decisions. I was truly happy with everything I sent to the Group on the day, and, of course, particularly thrilled when my Black Cocker Spaniel not only won the Sporting Group but went on to Best in Show under an icon of my breed. It was very cool!
3. Why do you think M&E has remained relevant to preservation breeders and dog show exhibitors in the 21st century?
David Kittredge: For preservation breeders, it is the “kid in a candy store” scenario. Just about every breed is well-represented, with dogs from dedicated people who have worked so hard to improve quality and interest. Most breeds have National Specialties or Supported Entries, where good quality and numbers are shown. But Morris & Essex brings them all together to show the fruits of their collective labor. For that same reason, a win here is both rewarding and memorable.
I hope everyone had as much fun, enjoyment, and fulfillment on that day as I did!
