Dennis B. Sprung – NOHS Finals Best in Show

Dennis B Sprung

Interview with Dennis B. Sprung – NOHS Finals Best in Show

Can you describe your reaction to receiving an invitation to judge the Finals of the National Owner-Handled Series (NOHS) at the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin?

During a planning session for the show, Gina and Michael suggested that I judge Best at the AKC National Owner-Handled Series Finals. I was initially hesitant due to my responsibilities as Show Chair. However, knowing that our Show Committee and staff are most capable to carry on I willingly accepted.

What does it mean to judge this singular event at the only all-breed show organized directly by the American Kennel Club?

As a former Judge, my belief has been that every AKC assignment is one to be proud of. This entry was impressive at 875 and I was confident the Group Judges would send quality into the Finals.

In your opinion, how does this show differ from other AKC events?

It differs in size and scope, being the largest Conformation show in North America, with its combination of Junior Showmanship, Fast CAT, Agility, Obedience, National Owner-Handled Series Finals, Puppy & Junior Stakes and Bred-By.

The aggregate entry was 9,801. The magnitude of the events requires intricate planning to execute the logistics necessary to serve our Breeders, Exhibitors, and Judges, and in achieving with the many volunteers who give of their knowledge and time.

Our spectators, many of whom are dog people, appreciated the depth of the competition.

What were you thinking or feeling moments before you stepped into the center of the NOHS Finals ring?

I was calm and looking forward to the balance of the evening’s Groups, the entire next day, and then the crowning of America’s National Champion.

Was there a heightened energy coming from the dog and owner-handled teams? Did you feel the energy of the spectators?

Certainly, I did feel that excitement, as the quality was evident, witnessing healthy, well-tempered purebred dogs combined with the human-canine bond and breed-specific presentations. Our spectators, many of whom are dog people, appreciated the depth of the competition.

How challenging was this assignment? Can you share your selection process?

Not challenging, as it was actually another enjoyable experience. My examination process was to individually examine, sending each down and back to a free-stack, then around the ring. Next was a look at their profiles and another full circle to view the silhouette in motion. I did as each of our Judges do in comparing every dog to the Parent Club Breed Standard and choose the one closest for Best.

It absolutely highlights the important position of the Owner-Handler within the AKC Universe. In the Finals, each handler was proficient in portraying their dog’s unique breed characteristics. These handlers can hold their own in any competition with anyone. As I stated, the seven handlers were superb; with the two winners happening to be Juniors, which demonstrates a bright future in the world for Conformation.

Do you have a word or two about your NOHS Finals winner? About the Group winners?

In my opinion, the Irish Setter exudes breed type, presented in excellent condition, and handled very well. The Australian Shepherd is pure quality and in superb condition.

Are there specific ways in which the NOHS furthers the cause of purebred dogs?

It absolutely highlights the important position of the Owner-Handler within the AKC Universe. In the Finals, each handler was proficient in portraying their dog’s unique breed characteristics. These handlers can hold their own in any competition with anyone. As I stated, the seven handlers were superb; with the two winners happening to be Juniors, which demonstrates a bright future in the world for Conformation.

A show of this magnitude is a monumental undertaking. Is there anything you’d like to say on behalf of the AKC and the show’s sponsors?

I thank my committee for their outstanding work throughout the planning year; Gina, Michael, Jason, Amanda, Paula, and Ashley. Also, the dedicated staff in AKC and Royal Canin who contributed mightily with planning and follow through. It is a passion of love for the sports. There are countless details to attend to before, during, and after the events. My appreciation to AKC’s Board of Directors for the confidence placed in staff to serve our constituency well.

Now that it’s over, what are your thoughts on the 2023 show year? Any thoughts on the
year ahead?

We achieved many successes in 2023. The last two years have been record-setting both in the number of events and entries. With 27 sports, we have something for everyone, and as a result, we have welcomed many newcomers under our umbrella, the result of responsible breeding, responsible ownership, good sportsmanship, and the promotion of the AKC brand.
