Interview with Fiona McBride | 2024 MCKC Breed Judge

1. What does it mean to be invited to judge at one of the most important dog shows in the world—Montgomery?

Fiona McBride: Being invited to judge Montgomery County KC Terrier Show is a tremendous honor. Having been involved in dog sports since my teens and immersed in the show world since 1989, this invitation reflects recognition of my expertise, experience, and reputation in breeding and judging. Montgomery is renowned for its extensive range of exhibits—offering depth of quality in numbers not seen in Australia these days—and for the exceptionally high caliber of terriers, which provided me with a unique opportunity to engage with top breeders, handlers, and terrier enthusiasts from around the globe. It’s truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for which I am deeply grateful to have experienced.

2. Can you share your thoughts on your Breed assignment? Please be specific.

Fiona McBride: During my assignment for Staffordshire Bull Terriers, I was impressed by several dogs that exhibited desirable characteristics. The handling varied among exhibitors, with some demonstrating excellent skills in highlighting their dogs’ strengths. Overall, I was pleased with the quality of the exhibits I shortlisted, particularly my main winners: BOB, BOW, BOS, SD, SB, and the two AOM recipients.

3. In your opinion, what does the future hold for the Terrier Breeds in America and around the world?

Fiona McBride: This is a complex question, especially given the overall decline in dog show attendance globally. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see a significant number of younger individuals exhibiting dogs at Hatboro, Devon, and Montgomery County, which gives me hope for the future of terriers in America and beyond.

To ensure a promising future, we must continue to educate and inspire newcomers to appreciate and embrace the art of breeding and showing healthy, sound, quality dogs in accordance with the Breed Standards. Achieving this will require collaborative efforts from organizations, breeders, enthusiasts, and others alike. By fostering a commitment to preserving these breeds, we can honor the legacy of dedicated breeders from our generation and those before us.

Thank you to the editorial and production manager of SHOWSIGHT magazine for inviting me to share my thoughts on my judging experience. I am immensely grateful to the office bearers of the Montgomery County Kennel Club for the opportunity to judge at the 2024 Montgomery County Kennel Club Terrier Show.
