Honoring the Life and Legacy of Robert ‘Bob’ Stein
It is with deep respect and sadness that we share the passing of Robert “Bob” Stein on August 28, 2025.
Bob’s love affair with Afghan Hounds began in 1955, when he stepped into the sport with his very first hound. Just a year later, he founded Charaj Kennels with his foundation bitch—marking the start of a remarkable journey that would span decades, bring forth countless champions, and influence the breed forever. Among his many achievements, Bob bred the nation’s top-producing Afghan Hound bitch in 1970. His passion also extended to Salukis, where he enjoyed equal success.
As a respected judge, Bob’s assignments took him across nearly every state and around the globe—from Japan to Finland, Australia to Israel. He presided over some of the sport’s most prestigious events, including Westminster, the Afghan Hound Club of America Specialty (three times), the Saluki Club of America National, and even the World Dog Show.

Beyond the show ring, Bob gave generously of his time and leadership. He served on boards and in officer roles for the Afghan Hound Club of America, the Afghan Hound Club of Southwestern Ohio, and the Daytona Kennel Club.
A retired architect and real estate developer, Bob made his home with his wife, Helen, and their beloved dogs—including champion Afghans and Beanie Sue, their champion Chinese Crested.
Bob will be remembered not only as a mentor and accomplished breeder-judge, but also as a true steward of the hounds he loved. His influence, both in the ring and within our community, will endure for generations.
