Interview with Leah Graham – 2023 National Dog Show Best Junior Handler

Congratulations, Leah, on your Best Junior Handler win at the 2023 National Dog Show Presented by Purina! Is it a dream come true?

Leah Graham: Yes, it is, because we live locally and it’s the biggest show in Pennsylvania, and I know that a bunch of kids from all over the country came, so I’m glad I could represent Pennsylvania.

How was the overall experience of being at the Philadelphia show for you? Were you busy all weekend?

Leah Graham: Yes, very busy helping other handlers and showing different breeds. Philly is different because it’s a benched show, and we try to have our dogs available to meet the crowd. “Bling” is really friendly, so we knew this would be a great event for her.

Who was the first person you called or texted after you’d won?

Leah Graham: Another Junior Handler, Lexie Littlefield, who was not at the show. Then, I called my Dad who was back home because my Mom was already there.

I’ve had Bling out showing consistently and I knew she would give the most solid performance, as we have found our rhythm.

How have you celebrated your victory? Did you and your dog enjoy a special meal that night?

Leah Graham: Me and my Mom went to a nice restaurant, and my dog Bling got a bully stick. Then, I went shopping at the King of Prussia Mall with another Junior Handler, Leela Werner.

You’ve shown several different dogs in Juniors. How did you choose which dog to show this year?

Leah Graham: I’ve had Bling out showing consistently and I knew she would give the most solid performance, as we have found our rhythm.

What does your dog mean to you now that you share this win together?

Leah Graham: I know that Bling will give a consistent, reliable performance every time, no matter the crowd. So, she’s given me peace of mind and I can definitely rely on her—no surprises.

Helping other handlers as a Junior helped me learn how to handle, groom, and maintain all breeds. My confidence has improved when I’m in the ring and I’ve met a lot of great people doing it.

How has Junior Handling made a difference in your life? In your family’s life?

Leah Graham: Helping other handlers as a Junior helped me learn how to handle, groom, and maintain all breeds. My confidence has improved when I’m in the ring and I’ve met a lot of great people doing it. As for my family, we have a lot of dogs now, so we always have a deep bench to pull off of.

Would you like to say a few words about this year’s judge?

Leah Graham: I really liked this year’s judge because she understood my breed. When we first brought her out, people said I wouldn’t win with an Australian Cattle Dog as they’re not flashy enough. But she’s a very nice Cattle Dog and even though we’re both small, we weren’t overlooked by this judge.

Can you offer any advice to Juniors looking to compete at next year’s National Dog Show?

Leah Graham: I would say to not worry about what others in the ring are doing and only worry about yourself. Visualize what you’re going to do next and don’t worry about what you could do wrong but what you can do right. Always try to visualize the picture you’re showing the judge and don’t rush.

What’s next for Leah?

Leah Graham: I’m continuing to be mentored under breeders and handlers that I respect, and looking forward to producing my first bred-by litter in 2024 under the mentorship of Lyudmila Halligan of Cola De Rata Chihuahuas. I’d really like to travel more out of our area with a professional handler.
