1. How were you first introduced to the sport of purebred dogs? To your breed?

Jennifer Thomason: My journey into the sport of purebred dogs began with a deep appreciation for the remarkable characteristics and legacy of my breed. From my first encounter, I was captivated by their distinctiveness and dedication. I was fortunate to be introduced by a close friend who was passionate about the breed and showed me the intricacies of training, showing, and breeding.

2. How many years in dogs? How many as an Owner Handler? As a Breeder?

Jennifer Thomason: I have been actively involved in the world of purebred dogs for 19 years, with only one of those years dedicated to handling, and 14 years as a breeder. Each role has enriched my experience and deepened my respect for the commitment and skill this sport demands.

3. Do you attend show handling classes? Have you attended in-person handling seminars?

Jennifer Thomason: Yes, I regularly attend show handling classes and in-person seminars whenever possible. The opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals and refine my skills has been invaluable, not only for my own growth but also for improving the presentation of my dogs.

4. Have you found virtual learning tools to be helpful? Videos? Websites? Social Media? AKC Canine College?

Jennifer Thomason: Virtual tools have been indispensable, especially during times when in-person resources were limited. AKC Canine College, online videos, and breed-specific social media communities have provided a wealth of knowledge, offering tips on everything from grooming to competition strategies.

5. Do you compete in the National Owner-Handled Series? Are rankings important to you?

Jennifer Thomason: I do compete in the National Owner-Handled Series. While rankings are one measure of success, my primary goal is to exhibit my breed’s qualities with integrity. It’s about continually striving to improve, both as an Owner Handler and as a representative of my breed.

6. How important is the Bred-By Class to you? How important are Specialties?

Jennifer Thomason: The Bred-By Class is exceptionally important as it showcases dogs bred and shown by their breeder, demonstrating commitment to both the breed and the sport. Specialties are also critical, as they allow breeders to celebrate the unique attributes of each breed among knowledgeable peers and esteemed judges.

7. Is it a challenge to compete with your breed as a Breeder/Owner Handler?

Jennifer Thomason: Yes, every competition presents its own set of challenges. Competing as a Breeder/Owner Handler with my breed is both demanding and rewarding. I take pride in the fact that I handle my own dogs, even when it requires balancing multiple roles.

Jennifer Thomason: I have been fortunate to learn from a few outstanding mentors who’ve shared their insights generously and guided me through the complexities of breeding and handling. Their advice and support have been instrumental in shaping my approach.

9. How important is the Breeder/Owner Handler to the future of the sport? To your breed?

Jennifer Thomason: Breeder/Owner Handlers are essential to the sport’s sustainability and the preservation of Breed Standards. Their hands-on approach ensures that breeds are represented authentically and responsibly, allowing each generation to reflect the dedication and expertise of those who truly understand and love their breed.

10. What advice would you give to Owner Handlers who are thinking of breeding their dog(s)?

Jennifer Thomason: I would encourage Owner Handlers who are considering breeding to invest time in understanding their breed’s Standard and to seek mentorship. There is always that one elusive victory or recognition, but I am proud of each milestone that reflects our journey and progress.

12. Is there a funny story that you can share about your experiences as a Breeder/Owner Handler?

Jennifer Thomason: One memorable moment was when my dog, Hammie, decided to show his affection and level of relaxation for the judge with an enthusiastic yoga move called the downward dog that made the judge chuckle. It’s these lighthearted moments that remind me how much I enjoy this journey with my dogs.
