Frank Kane had his first dog, a blue roan Cocker, in 1962 and has been involved in the world of show dogs ever since. While at university, he bought a Sealyham Terrier with part of his student grant, and this dog, Prince Charming Of Mannin, became a champion. After university he acquired two American Cocker bitches, while the breed was in its infancy in the UK. One became a champion and both produced multiple champions. Retaining his love of (English) Cockers, he became a championship show judge in 1974 and is now approved to judge all Groups and Best in Show in the UK. He judged Best in Show at Crufts in 2012. After retiring from his lecturing career, he became a member of The Kennel Club Board, and among his roles there he was chairman of the Breed Standards Committee for 16 years and chairman of one of the dog health groups. He has written several books on dogs, notably Judging the Gundog Breeds, which is used in several countries in training schemes for judges. For the past 20 years, Frank has been a commentator and presenter in the television coverage of Crufts. Outside his canine interests, Frank retains his interest in equine sports, particularly the showing of hacks and hunters. He is a keen tennis fan and loves the theater arts.
