Biewer Terriers: Celebrating Five Years in the AKC Toy Group
The Biewer Terrier may be one of the American Kennel Club’s youngest recognized breeds, but in just five short years it has captured the hearts of exhibitors, judges, and dog lovers nationwide. As we celebrate our fifth anniversary of AKC recognition in the Toy Group, the Biewer Terrier Club of America, Inc. (BTCA) reflects on a journey marked by dedication, collaboration, and growth—and looks ahead to an even brighter future.
A Milestone Celebration in Orlando
This December, following our National Specialty in Orlando, the BTCA will host a semi-formal Gala Dinner to commemorate this special anniversary. The event will not only honor the breed’s remarkable progress since its recognition in 2021 but also celebrate the individuals whose passion and commitment have helped shape the Biewer Terrier’s success in the ring and beyond. For more information on the gala contact: events@biewerterrierclubofamerica.org.

A Breed in Evolution
Like all developing breeds, the Biewer Terrier continues to evolve thoughtfully and purposefully. The club recently concluded the 60-day publication period for proposed updates to the AKC Breed Standard, ensuring that it remains a true reflection of the breed’s essence and structure. The membership voting process is expected to be finalized by year’s end, setting the stage for official AKC approval in early 2026.

Investing in Education and Excellence
With the Standard’s refinement comes a renewed emphasis on education. The BTCA Judges Education Committee is currently modernizing its materials and presentations to align with the forthcoming updates. Beginning in 2026, the club will launch a comprehensive education initiative—including enhanced in-person seminars and accessible online training opportunities—to equip judges and breeders with the most accurate and consistent information about this vibrant Toy breed.
Supporting Breeders at Every Stage
As a young and fast-growing breed community, many BTCA members are new to the world of breeding and exhibiting. The Breeder Education Committee is committed to supporting their success through the distribution of educational resources, mentorship, and seminars designed to strengthen understanding of responsible breeding practices, structure, and breed type. These efforts ensure that as our breed matures, it does so with a foundation of sound knowledge and integrity. For more information, contact: breedersed@biewerterrierclubofamerica.org.
Encouraging Junior Participation
The future of any breed lies in the hands of the next generation, and the BTCA is eager to welcome Junior Handlers into the world of the Biewer Terrier. While there’s plenty to learn—especially when it comes to grooming and presentation—there are also wonderful opportunities for interested Juniors to work alongside experienced breeders and exhibitors who are ready to mentor and guide them. Those interested in learning more about Junior participation or mentorship opportunities are encouraged to contact: juniors@biewerterrierclubofamerica.org.

Building Local Clubs Across the Country
As a newly established AKC parent club, the BTCA recognizes the importance of developing local clubs to support our members and strengthen the breed’s foundation nationwide. These clubs serve as vital touchpoints for education, camaraderie, and hands-on experience for both new and experienced fanciers.
Currently, there are two local clubs in existence, and the BTCA hopes to see more formed in the near future—with the long-term goal of partnering under the BTCA umbrella. Those interested in learning more about forming a local club or connecting with others in their region can reach out to: acr@biewerterrierclubofamerica.org.

The Road Ahead
In just five years, the Biewer Terrier has transitioned from a newcomer to a recognized contender in the Toy Group, winning admiration for its elegance, joyful spirit, and distinct tricolor beauty. The future promises continued progress, deeper understanding, and a shared commitment to preserving what makes this breed so special.
As we gather in Orlando to celebrate this milestone, we also celebrate the people who have brought the Biewer Terrier to where it is today—and those who will carry it proudly into tomorrow.
