Interview with Edward A. Fojtik – 2024 WKC Dog Show Breed Judge
What does it mean to you personally to be invited to judge at this year’s historic Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show?
Edward A. Fojtik: Last summer, an envelope with the Westminster logo came to my home. On occasion, we all get something from Westminster, but this envelope was a little different. It suddenly occurred to me what might be inside… I felt like I was Charlie from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory winning a Golden Ticket! I immediately responded. Within minutes of my response, I was delighted to receive a personal email from Dave Helming, happy that I was accepting the assignment. That meant as much to me as the invite, as Dave was truly one a kind!
Can you share a few comments on your various Breed assignments? Please be specific.
Edward A. Fojtik: I was given several Working breeds and a Terrier breed. Without commenting on individual dogs, I would like to say is this… I have been to Westminster and won, and I have been to Westminster and lost. I saw many beautiful dogs and with each decision I made, I could feel the rush of adrenaline of the handler that I gave the breed to and I could completely empathize with the disappointment of those who fell short of their expectations. It was a dream of mine to win, and after a lot of hard work and persistence it happened. Don’t give up!
What are your thoughts on the 2024 show year so far? On the months ahead?
Edward A. Fojtik: Every dog show year brings surprise dogs that came out of nowhere. Then there are some of those breeders and handlers who just keep producing great dogs after dogs. What more can you do but tip your cap?
