Interview with Sylvia T. Barkey – 2023 National Dog Show Breed Judge

What does it mean to be invited to judge at this year’s National Dog Show Presented by Purina?

I consider it a great honor to have been invited to judge the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and the National Dog Show Presented by Purina. Large and prestigious shows are precious pats on the back for Conformation judges. They express appreciation for many hours of studying, application of knowledge, and past jobs well done.

To be televised can be stressful, and extra preparation needs to be taken so that you stay in your mindset while judging and look neat and professional at the same time. We are very aware that we are under the spotlight to encourage interest in our beloved dogs and sport. I had a fabulous time and loved every minute of this awesome event!

Can I share my thoughts on my various Breed assignments?

Breed assignments can be very interesting. I find judging my own breed the most difficult. Since I have owned and bred Staffordshire Bull Terriers for almost 50 years, I know them inside and out, and I can tend to over-think my choices. I am always hardest on the things closest to me. I have to try not to break down every inch of my exhibits. I try to save that for my own before I take them out to show.

I also try to make each Breed assignment as pleasant as possible for both the dogs and the owners. Puppies need to have fun. Exhibitors need to see a smile and be able to relax. Then the exhibits will show themselves to their best advantage.

Our dog show community is a wonderful group when we
pull together.

Now that it’s nearly over, what are my thoughts on the 2024 show year? Any thoughts on the year ahead?

2024. Wow! Looking ahead, we all have new exhibits and new assignments. Thinking about either puts a huge smile on my face. How privileged we are to have those events presented to us! We must always remember that there are people without this fortune. Thankfully, most clubs, and the larger clubs such as the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and the National Dog Show, are there, along with such charities as Take the Lead, to help those who are not always so blessed. Our dog show community is a wonderful group when we pull together.
