The Yorkshire Terrier

The following is an excerpt from Dogs of the World: The Origin, Traits and Characteristics of Well-known Dogs, published by Suttonhouse in 1935.

This creature of overdress, void of his natural instinct for sports, is an artificial toy who needs a valet. He needs even to eat with a mask to keep his carefully arranged and well-groomed whiskers out of his food.

His long silk hair which nearly conceals him must be carefully parted directly in the middle from nose point to tail tip. Sometimes, he even has to wear linen stockings to protect his coat when he scratches himself, as any well-trained dog will do no matter how refined the environment. He accentuates the scheme of things by holding his perky little head high in the air. True to form in coloring, his coat must be steel blue from back of the ears. The feet and head are tan and in rare spots where short hair occurs, his coat must be darker and richer blue. He is classified according to weight, which should be from five to seven pounds. He is typically a show dog.

However, at one time this terrier was a utility dog and classed as other terriers, a working dog.
