Interview with Pamela Bruce – 2024 WKC Dog Show Breed Judge
What does it mean to you personally to be invited to judge at this year’s historic Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show?
Pamela Bruce: Judging at this event was an incredible honor. The event was a wonderful gathering of friends we call family. I was deeply touched by the invitation from Dr. Sturz—and in the memory of our beloved Dave Helming.
Can you share a few comments on your various Breed assignments? Please be specific.
Pamela Bruce: The overall quality of the entries was outstanding. The depth in the breeds made decisions almost impossible. I did not have enough awards for many dogs I truly thought were excellent breed specimens—especially in Bedlington Terriers. In a field of that quality, only one leaves the ring happy on that day. What many have to understand is those dogs could be highly awarded on another day—it’s not all or nothing. Showing dogs is a marathon—not a sprint! I was honored to be able to evaluate my own breed in a class of quality Airedale Terriers.
The most special moment of the event for me was to be able to award Poodle Master Kaz Hosaka and his exquisite Miniature Poodle “Sage” BOV to send her on her way to the Non-Sporting Group, and then BIS under my mentor Roz Kramer. Sage, in flawless condition, gave the performance of a lifetime. I am so beyond thrilled I was there to watch them at what I understand was their retirement show. RBIS to the lovely GSD “Mercedes,” piloted by Kent Boyle, was wonderful as well. There were some incredible dogs and handlers showing their hearts out!
What are your thoughts on the 2024 show year so far? On the months ahead?
Pamela Bruce: The breeds are deep in quality. The balance of showmanship, conditioning, etc., relevant to each breed, will ensure they have a successful show year. Best of luck to everyone and I hope they attain the goals they set for themselves and their beloved dogs!
