Interview with Marilyn Van Vleit – 2023 National Dog Show Breed Judge

What does it mean to be invited to judge at this year’s National Dog Show Presented by Purina?

This was an assignment I eagerly anticipated and the event itself did not disappoint. This event stands out because of its pageantry and high level of professionalism. Frank DePaulo and his committee provide the ultimate in a dog show experience for judges, exhibitors, and the public. I encourage everyone to experience this event. Because of the “benching” areas, exhibitors gathered together and shared their love of the breeds and the sport. Ringside support was unparalleled. As I judged, it was so rewarding to hear the fellow exhibitors and the public cheering for their friends and favorites. Although I’ve judged in nine countries, and had some wonderful experiences, this one stands out.

Can I share my thoughts on my various Breed assignments?

I judged both Saturday and Sunday. The entries are different from the usual shows we judge because of the large number of Specials that are shown in each breed. On Saturday, it was my pleasure to judge Whippets and many Herding breeds. The Whippet entry was deep in quality and there were 14 Specials. The standouts in the breeds were the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Belgian Sheepdog, Rough Collie, Bergamasco (there were 19!), Pyrenean Shepherd, and Border Collie. On Sunday, I had the honor of judging the Herding Group. Watching those beautiful Herding dogs sweep that big ring with the lights and music was a thrill. I was formally escorted to the center of the ring to begin the process of judging.

Now that it’s nearly over, what are my thoughts on the 2024 show year? Any thoughts on the year ahead?

2023 was a memorable year, because of the variety of ways I enjoyed the sport of dogs. I had the pleasure of briefly campaigning my own dog, some memorable judging experiences (the Czech Republic and the National Dog Show, to name two), and a continuation of adding new breeds to my judging resumé. In 2024, I plan to concentrate on finishing the Hound Group and focus on continuing education. Our sport is facing many obstacles; diseases, losing venues, increases in costs, and fewer serious breeders. We all need to work together to see that our sport survives.
