  1. What were you thinking or feeling moments before you stepped into the center of the Sporting Group ring?
Beth Sweigart: The Sporting Group was, indeed, one of the strongest Groups of the weekend. Kudos to all the Breed judges who put through such quality animals to the Group. Judges often say there were not enough ribbons, but on this occasion, I think it is true. I truly had an embarrassment of riches from which to choose.
  2. How challenging was this assignment?
Beth Sweigart:It was an honor to judge such lovely dogs, all of whom were sound of mind and body and are great examples of their breeds. And I must say, credit goes to their breeders. It was great to see such quality.
  3. Do you have a word or two about your Group winner? About the dogs that placed?
Beth Sweigart:What can I say about “Beacon,” the German Wirehaired Pointer whom I placed first. Besides being beautiful, she is also brilliant. As impressive in the field as in the confirmation ring. She glides around the ring so effortlessly… she cannot be denied.
Second to the Lagotto that I have admired since first seeing her in the Group at Crufts a few years ago when we were on the brink of COVID. It was a pleasure to see her so well-presented and in great condition… she showed beautifully
The Brittany was, again, presented so well, and when moving was “all Brittany” which should be covering ground with ease.
The Labrador bitch exuded breed type, was in good condition, with great coat, and had a lovely expression and a correct tail. All this and she could move… well-deserving of a placement in such a strong Group.
  4. A dog show of this magnitude is a monumental undertaking. Is there anything you’d like to say on behalf of the AKC and the show’s sponsors?
Beth Sweigart:I would like to thank the American Kennel Club staff for presenting such a huge show under trying circumstances, while taking every precaution to keep all the participants safe and healthy. And again, I thank the show committee for inviting me to participate in this event.
