Interview with Hound Group Judge Pam Lambie

Where do I live? How many years in dogs? How many years as a judge?

I live in Phoenix, Arizona. I have been in dogs for 46 years, judging for eight years.

What is my original breed? What is/was my kennel name?

My original breed is the Mastiff. My kennel name: LamBay.

Can I list a few of the notable dogs I’ve bred? Any performance or parent club titles?

Notable dogs include CH Lambay’s Kaluha N Cream (Mastiff), BISS CH LamBay’s Spice N Castlecrest (Whippet), and BISS Grand Champion Pupukearidge Night Marcher CGC CGCU CGCA TKI (Rhodesian Ridgeback). There are many others, but I’m not at home to pull my file.

What are some of the qualities I most admire in the Hound breeds?

I admire their ability and desire to do what they were bred to do!

Have I judged any Hound Breed/Group Specialties?

Yes. I have judged the Trinity Valley Rhodesian Ridgeback Club, Borzoi Club of (Southern) California, and I am slated to judge the Rhodesian Ridgeback National Specialty in 2023!

Hounds are, first and foremost, hunters. How does this inform my decision-making in the show ring?

I place significant importance on this!

How important are breed hallmarks in the Sighthounds?

In the Scenthounds? In the “Primitive” Hounds? Breed hallmarks are MUST HAVES in every breed! It is what makes them unique.

Would I have any advice to impart to newer judges of the Hound Breeds who come from other Groups?

Outlines! Please pay attention to their outlines!

In my opinion, how do today’s exhibits compare with the Hounds of the past?

Every breed is unique. I feel breeders and judges lean towards breeding for and awarding the “generic” show dog. Each breed is special and different in its own way. Huge emphasis should always be put on breed type!

When it comes to Group and Best in Show competition, do Hounds have a “leg up” or a liability? (Think Westminster.)

It is my hope, at every show, that all candidates in the Best in Show lineup be given the same consideration.

If I could share my life with only one Hound Breed, which would it be and why?

TOUGH ONE FOR ME… I do love my Whippets and Ridgebacks!

Just for laughs, do I have a funny story that I can share about my experiences judging the Hound Group?

No funny stories yet while judging the Hound Group. I have PLENTY of funny stories from my handling days about showing in the Hound Group.
