Interview with Kathleen Rost – 2023 MCKC Dog Show Breed Judge
What does it mean to be invited to judge at one of the most important dog shows in the world—Montgomery?
Kathleen Rost: I have been breeding Welsh Terriers exclusively since 1968. I have bred National Specialty winners and multiple all-breed Best in Show dogs, and I have mentored new breeders. This is by far the highest honor I can ever receive. The Welsh Terrier Club of America invites the judge by membership voting, and to be chosen and recognized by my peers is my highest form of achievement.
Can I share my thoughts on my Breed assignment?
Kathleen Rost: I was assigned to judge the Welsh Terrier Club of America National Specialty held at Montgomery County. The entry was the largest in over 10 years. There were dogs represented from all over the world. The quality was deep and breed type was apparent. The quality of the males was exciting. The entry, on the whole, was in beautiful condition and well presented. It was a joy to judge these animals.
In my opinion, what does the future hold for the Terrier Breeds in America and around the world?
Kathleen Rost: The future of the Welsh Terrier is bright. Dogs were shown in beautiful condition. The breed type seems to be understood and is pretty consistent internationally. The puppies showed promise for our future generations. The Terrier Group is a challenge due to the intense grooming. Our population is low. It is a challenge to sometimes convince new breeders that this is definitely worth it in the end, and we must continue to mentor and support those up-and-coming breeders in our sport.
