Insights from an Owner Handler Greg Rodgers

Greg & Phyllis Rodgers

Interview with an Owner Handler, Greg Rodgers

Where do I live?

Greg Rodgers: I live in Johnson City, Tennessee. I have been showing as an Owner Handler for about three years.

How did I get my start in my breed?

Greg Rodgers: I had always wanted a Bulldog, so we got our first two as pets. When they were about one year old, we met a groomer who said that they were nice Bulldogs and we should try showing them. As it turned out, we won Winners at our first dog show.

Have I always loved show dogs? Have I always been a dog person?

Greg Rodgers: We have always had dogs throughout our lives. Until we got our first Bulldogs, we had little knowledge about dog shows.

Is there a story behind my decision to show my own dog?

Greg Rodgers: When we first started, most of the people we met were showing their own dogs and would tell us that it was more rewarding when you show your own dog.

What makes showing my own dog special?

Greg Rodgers: Just knowing that we did it and earned our titles the old-fashioned way.

In my opinion, is there a secret to having a great dog/handler partnership?

Greg Rodgers: Just make sure your dog is having fun.

Do I compete in the National Owner-Handled Series?

Greg Rodgers: Yes, I have been competing for about three years.

What goals did I set for myself and for my dog? What about 2023?

We had a goal to be the No. 1 Owner-Handled Bulldog and to be ranked in the Top 5 All-Breed.

As far as 2023, that is still pending.

Am I going to Orlando? If so, what is it like to have a top NOHS dog this year?

Greg Rodgers: Yes, we are going, hoping to get there and enjoy the show, and hoping to have good results.

Just for laughs, do I have a funny story that I can share about my experiences as an Owner Handler?

Nothing special, I just laugh at all the little mistakes we made when we first got started.
