Insights From Dr. Margaret A. Reed – 2025 WKC Dog Show Breed Judge

What does it mean to you personally to be invited to judge at this year’s historic Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show?

Dr. Margaret A. Reed: It was truly a great honor, joy, and privilege to judge the WKC and the realization that dreams really do come true! There was a marvelous article in The New York Times suggesting that it was easier to become a brain surgeon than it was to judge The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show—point well taken! From the first time my Mom and I walked into Madison Square Garden for the Westminster show in 1969 until the day I judged this year, it has been the accumulation of years of devotion, passion, showing, breeding, heartbreak, education, relationship building, judging matches, seminars, but mostly an innate love of dogs that finally came together in one spectacular moment. As The Westminster Kennel Club motto goes, “There’s only one!”

Can you share a few comments on your various Breed assignments? Please be specific.

Dr. Margaret A. Reed: The quality of the exhibits at this show was of a very high standard and exemplified the very essence of breed type. Several of my decisions could have gone in other directions—the exhibits were that good! In particular, the Shih Tzu and Yorkshire Terrier entries were simply spectacular. Outstanding specimens that proudly represented all the breeds were evident throughout the day. The exhibitors’ professionalism and dedication to their breeds exemplified their commitment to the sport of purebred dogs at the highest level. My sincerest gratitude to all the exhibitors for accepting my decisions with grace and honor.

What are your thoughts on the 2024/25 show years? On the year ahead?

Dr. Margaret A. Reed: The Westminster Kennel Club has certainly been revitalized, with the new leadership which strives to deliver a first-class event that appeals to all who love dogs. The strategic and creative vision of WKC President Donald J. Sturz, Jr., has certainly set the tone and raised the bar for dog shows across the US as well as on a global level. I believe there was a period of time when dog shows went through “growing pains” and were caught “flat-footed” as to what direction in which to move, but with the worldwide recognition of Westminster promoting Performance, Junior Showmanship, Conformation, and Obedience events, people who love dogs have something to get excited about. I’m also thrilled to learn that Patricia Proctor is now a member of The Westminster Kennel Club. There is no doubt that her many years of expertise as chief of the AKC Field Reps will benefit the club greatly and provide an all-encompassing club.
