Interview With Laurent Heinesche – 2025 WKC Dog Show Breed Judge

What does it mean to you personally to be invited to judge at this year’s historic Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show?

Laurent Heinesche: It is incredibly difficult to put into words the feeling of being honored with the opportunity to judge at The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, so immense is this privilege. In my wildest dreams, and when I think back to my first visit over 30 years ago, I could never have dared to imagine that, one day, I would stand in the center of the ring, officiating as a judge at such a prestigious event.

The emotion was all the greater, as this year marked the return of The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show to Madison Square Garden, a place so deeply intertwined with the history and legacy of this iconic competition. To be part of this historic moment, alongside so many distinguished colleagues and passionate participants, added an extraordinary sense of fulfillment and awe to the experience.

Can you share a few comments on your various Breed assignments? Please be specific.

Laurent Heinesche: I had the great privilege of judging breeds that are particularly close to my heart, many of which I have bred or owned myself. I must admit that the overall quality was truly impressive. It was also a pleasure to see that some of the top breeders and exhibitors who were present in the rings during my early years are still competing at an exceptional level—some even securing top placements. This was particularly evident in the Maltese breed.

I was also highly impressed by the quality of the Poodles, which were represented by numerous outstanding specimens. Each one embodied the breed’s characteristics with remarkable precision, fully meeting the Standards set by both the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

My Best of Breed Pomeranian was a truly magnificent dog, perfectly proportioned, with a beautifully structured body and excellent substance. His head was both typical and expressive, adorned with that unmistakable “foxy” touch that defines the breed. What truly set him apart, however, was his movement – fluid, effortless, and remarkably efficient – adding yet another layer of allure to this exceptional little male. Brimming with presence and an undeniable touch of arrogance in the ring, he commanded attention with every step, embodying the very essence of the breed in both style and spirit.

The second day was filled with emotion as I had the honor of judging the Great Danes. Standing in the center of the ring, surrounded by so many well-balanced specimens, free from exaggeration and built in perfect accordance with the Standard, was a truly unforgettable experience.

The Best of Breed winner was a majestic male, perfectly proportioned and powerfully built without excess. His head was a masterpiece of breed type, with impeccable lines both in profile and from the front, exuding nobility and strength. This regal expression only enhanced his overall presence. His movement was then the final confirmation – effortless, fluid, and powerful, a testament to his exceptional structure. A truly outstanding representative of the breed.

What are your thoughts on the 2024/25 show years? On the year ahead?

Laurent Heinesche: My year was incredibly fulfilling, with numerous invitations to judge around the world, from one continent to another. Each assignment was not only an opportunity to evaluate exceptional dogs but also a chance to immerse myself in the passion and dedication that unite dog enthusiasts everywhere.

One of the greatest privileges of these experiences was meeting so many passionate individuals – breeders, exhibitors, and fellow judges – who share the same deep love for the sport. Engaging in discussions, exchanging perspectives, and continuously learning from one another made each event even more rewarding. I am truly grateful for these moments and the friendships formed along the way. As a lifelong enthusiast, I can only hope that this journey continues in the year ahead, bringing even more opportunities to celebrate and share our passion.
