Meet Pamela Bruce – 2024 AKC National Championship Bred-By-Exhibitor Non-Sporting Group Judge

1. Can you describe your reaction to receiving an invitation to judge the Bred-By-Exhibitor Non-Sporting Group at the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin?

Pamela Bruce: As an active breeder, I was honored to judge a breeders’ class as they are the foundation of our sport.

2. What does it mean to judge this event at the only all-breed show organized directly by the American Kennel Club?

Pamela Bruce: It is an incredible responsibility as it is a show of both great quality and large numbers. I feel this is the biggest breeder’s showcase in North America.

3. In your opinion, how does this show differ from other AKC events?

Pamela Bruce: It is a breeders’ event and the quality of each breed is deep—almost impossible to make choices in such quality and depth. At this event, we end up walking dogs out of our ring in every class that we truly appreciate and would be thrilled to have again in our ring another time!

4. What were you thinking or feeling moments before you stepped into the center of the BBE Group ring?

Pamela Bruce: I was greatly honored to judge a group of breeders and their excellent breed examples.

5. Was there a heightened energy coming from the dog and handler teams? Did you feel the energy of the spectators?

Pamela Bruce: I rarely pay much attention to the handlers as I am so focused on the brief moments with the dogs during the brief time I have to assess them.

6. How challenging was this assignment? Can you share your selection process?

Pamela Bruce: The depth of this Group was excellent. I try my best to enjoy the task at hand and make it a pleasant experience for both the dogs and their breeders. There are only four placements, so that is difficult.

7. Do you have a word or two about your BBE Group winner? About the dogs that placed?

Pamela Bruce: What an incredible Group to judge! I truly could have pointed in any direction and not made an error that day. Because of my family history, one of my heart breeds is the Lhasa Apso. My Group selection that day was, in fact, a Lhasa Apso that I felt was the Breed Standard personified! I was thrilled to send that team through to represent such a quality Group in the BBE BIS ring!

8. Breeders are fundamental to the health and welfare of the sport of dogs. Based on this assignment, are today’s breeders doing well by the sport and for their breeds?

Pamela Bruce: In my opinion, each breed was truly an excellent representative of their Standard. I feel breeders are the foundation for our sport. A judge’s true task is to evaluate breeding stock. I feel that the future looks bright.

9. A dog show of this magnitude is a monumental undertaking. Is there anything you’d like to say to the AKC and the show’s sponsors?

Pamela Bruce: THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO FOR OUR SPORT and for showcasing it’s foundation—BREEDERS! It is SO greatly appreciated!

10. Now that it’s over, what are your thoughts on the 2024 show year? Any thoughts on the year ahead?

Pamela Bruce: I wish everyone great success in the whelping box and in the rings—and pure enjoyment in 2025 and beyond.
