RHP Member Gives Back
(A version of this article originally appeared in the Quarterly RHP Newsletter.)
Being a Registered Handlers Program (RHP) member sets you apart from the rest, not only by your high level of integrity but because of the commitment to your profession, your passion for the dogs you take care of, and your dedication to the sport. As RHP members, another important thing you must be doing is giving back to the clubs that volunteer to provide you with an avenue to make your living. If every one of you belonged to a club and gave back one weekend of the year to assist, this could make a huge difference.
An example of one RHP member who does this is Mary Norton-Augustus. She has been Show Chair for Medina Kennel Club for 32 years. One thing her club does is go above and beyond to recognize the importance of the future of our sport. Her club offered an RHP Junior Clinic, had lovely ribbons for her All-Breed Junior Showmanship, a Limited Junior showmanship with $1,000 in gift cards, and a Pee Wee competition that had 21 children participate.
Medina KC offered pizza, gift bags, plus a host of other extras, and does it under the “Barkaritaville” theme. The entire show is decorated, complete with Tikki Bar, great music, an alcohol-free margarita machine, and so many items free to all who attend.
There was a local mother who had reached out to Mary on the Juniors’ clinic and came with her daughter to see what the clinic was like. Mary provided her daughter with a dog and she was able to participate in the Juniors’ clinic. They were both over the moon and want to know more about our dog shows. This is how we keep our beloved sport alive, by giving back at every opportunity that knocks on our door. We must bring new people in, and we must give our time to the clubs—or dog shows will not survive.
The AKC and I personally want to thank Mary, and the members of the Medina KC, for doing such an outstanding job and for all they do to keep the sport alive.
