The Working Group – Big Dogs, Big Hearts
The 32 bold and beautiful breeds of AKC’s Working Group include most of the world’s biggest purebred dogs. The obvious exception is the newly recognized Danish-Swedish Farmdog which, unlike its workmates, is examined in the show ring on a table. However, despite any inconvenience this may cause judges and stewards, the DSF is nevertheless referred to as the “Little Big Dog” by its supporters who worked tirelessly to achieve full recognition for the breed on January 1, 2025.
Work, of course, is what Working Dogs do best, and there’s no job that’s too tough for these breeds to tackle. Many are livestock guardian dogs that quietly and calmly watch over their property, always at the ready to leap into action to defend their charges against any threat. Some are ancient Northern breeds that have served as sled dogs, sentries, and trustworthy companions. Others are hunters capable of confronting bear, boar, and bigger beasts around the world. A few are adapted to water work, capable of retrieving or saving lives, and still more are versatile companions that protect and serve with steadfast determination unlike that seen in less dutiful dogs.
Among the best-known breeds of the Working Group, the Rottweiler is currently the most popular, followed by the Cane Corso, Doberman Pinscher, and Boxer. The Bernese Mountain Dog and Great Dane are also favored by those who enjoy dogs with a bit more brawn, as are the Siberian Husky, Mastiff, and Portuguese Water Dog. So too are the Newfoundland, Samoyed, and Giant Schnauzer. When it comes to heavy hitters with plenty of heart, there’s something for everyone among this collection of incomparable canine laborers.
Through the articles and interviews assembled in this issue, SHOWSIGHT has endeavored to celebrate the big and beautiful breeds of the Working Group through the words of the breeders and exhibitors who know them best. We hope you enjoy!
