The Finnish Spitz (Suomenpystykorva) has been the national dog of Finland since 1979. It’s known for its barking and is known as the barking bird dog. The breed is a hunting breed in its native Finland. The breed was trained to hunt Capercaillie, a bird in the grouse family. It has been known to hunt squirrels, rodents, elk, and even bear in its native country.

Finnish Spitz are a bark pointer breed, meaning, they alert the hunter where the game is with their barking. They are very vocal and have been estimated at barking up to 160 times per minute and are considered the King of Barkers in Finland, where they have a competition held among owners of the breed where the dog with the loudest and most impressive bark is crowned the champion. In Finland, their barking ability in the field must be proven before a Conformation championship can be earned. These dogs are prized for their barking ability! The breed is mainly used for hunting in Scandinavia.
