Interview with Pamela S. Lambie – 2024 AKC National Championship Hound Group Judge
1. Can you describe your reaction to receiving an invitation to judge the Hound Group at the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin?
Pamela S. Lambie: I can only say that my reaction to receiving the invitation was one of EXCITEMENT! For many years, I exhibited at this prestigious show. Now I can say that I have had the distinct honor of judging the Group in which I competed the most!
2. What does it mean to judge a Group at the only all-breed show organized directly by the American Kennel Club?
Pamela S. Lambie: Well, I am grateful for this wonderful opportunity.
3. In your opinion, how does this show differ from other AKC events?
Pamela S. Lambie: All clubs work diligently to execute well-run shows. The AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin is preceded by three All-Breed Shows along with a day for Specialties. This sets the week apart, culminating in a premier event like no other. Dogs, exhibitors, breeders, and judges come from all over the world to attend.
4. What were you thinking or feeling moments before you stepped into the center of the Group ring?
Pamela S. Lambie: Stepping into that ring was a full-circle moment! I was excited to see the winners that the judges sent to me for my consideration.
5. Was there a heightened energy coming from the dog and handler teams? Did you feel the energy of the spectators?
Pamela S. Lambie: There was DEFINITLEY a heightened energy throughout the building. To be able to compete on the red carpet is a dream for many breeders, owners, and handlers.
6. How challenging was this assignment? Can you share your selection process?
Pamela S. Lambie: It was not at all challenging. I only wish I had more ribbons! The ring was steeped in quality, making judging a pleasure!
7. Do you have a word or two about your Group winner? About the dogs that placed?
- First Place – Afghan Hound. The handsome Finn took top honors that night. He drew me in with that “look at me shine” attitude. He is shown to perfection and in impeccable condition. He takes my breath away!
- Second Place – Whippet. This beauty is smooth and curved in all the right places. Her beautiful dark eyes and melting expression, along with her low and free-moving gait, brought her to this win.
- Third Place – Azawakh. An excellent example of this unique breed. He moves with an agility and grace as if he were floating over the ground. This dog is elegant and fit and can do his job all day long!
- Fourth Place – Otterhound. This bitch oozes correct breed type! She has an imposing head, with a powerful neck setting smoothly into her shoulders. Her dense, rough, crisp coat, along with her ease of movement, was not to be denied.
8. A dog show of this magnitude is a monumental undertaking. Is there anything you’d like to say to the AKC and the show’s sponsors?
Pamela S. Lambie: I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the American Kennel Club and Royal Canin for the hard work and dedication that make this event so special.
9. Are there specific ways in which this show furthers the cause of purebred dogs?
Pamela S. Lambie: The location and the venue of this show make it easily accessible for exhibitors to attend. Also, the press covering this event draws in many spectators.
10. Now that it’s over, what are your thoughts on the 2024 show year? Any thoughts on the year ahead?
Pamela S. Lambie: The 2024 show year has brought me wonderful opportunities as an AKC Judge. I cannot wait to see what 2025 will bring!
