Meet Patricia Proctor: 2026 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Breed Judge
What does it mean to be invited to judge at this year’s historic 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show?
Patricia Proctor: For years, I would hear past judges talk about their excitement when they opened up that special letter inviting them to judge at Westminster KC. They were right. You read it once and can’t believe it, so you have to read it a few more times, which, of course, gives you goosebumps. SO exciting.
Can you share your thoughts on your various Breed assignments? Please be specific.
Patricia Proctor: I was honored with wonderful breeds to judge, some with large numbers of entries. And knowing that the top five in each breed are invited along with National Specialty winners, the anticipation of possibly having those dogs in my ring was exciting. Some of the breeds, such as Pugs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and Papillons, were more of a comfort zone for me as I had shown so many of them for so many years. But all in all, every breed that I was assigned was a pleasure to judge, as I found so many exhibits far above average in quality.
Now that your assignment is complete, what does Westminster mean to you personally?
Patricia Proctor: Having attended Westminster KC for decades—since I was a kid—and wearing many hats over those decades, the thrill has not diminished. I was happy for that feeling. It’s so true, “there is only one.”
