A Spectator’s View: The Magic of The National Dog Show Weekend
The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center buzzed with energy on November 16, 2024 as nearly 2,000 dogs and some 7,000 spectators gathered for the 2024 National Dog Show, part of the annual Kennel Club of Philadelphia cluster. The event, a beloved tradition that draws passionate dog lovers from across the country, offered an unforgettable experience filled with excitement, admiration, and, of course, plenty of wagging tails.
For first-time attendees, the Agility demonstrations were a sight to behold. The Border Collies and mixed breeds leaped and flew through the air, providing a thrilling experience. “I watch the show on TV every year with my family,” said Andrew Begany, an 18-year-old high school senior from Delaware County, Pennsylvania. “But seeing the Agility dogs jumping and catching frisbees was awesome.” Cheers erupted with every successful jump and perfect catch, and it was clear the dogs thrived on the crowd’s energy.

Inside the main ring, the Group judging drew spectators eager to see their favorite breeds in action. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as TV personalities John O’Hurley, David Frei, and Mary Carillo were in attendance, adding an extra layer of star power to the event. “I couldn’t believe Mary Carillo was here,” said Meg Begany from Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. “It’s one thing to watch her on TV during the Olympics, but seeing her in person was so exciting—and David Frei and John O’Hurley too! It made the whole experience feel even more special.”
Visitors wandered down the benching rows, marveling at the various breeds on display, from the elegant Great Danes to the graceful Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Each booth offered a personal touch, with owners proudly sharing stories about their dogs, training techniques, and breed characteristics. Barbara Dove, a first-time attendee from Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, paused to admire a Saint Bernard. “I’ve never seen one up close before,” she said. “The size, that adorable face—it’s just remarkable. This is my first time here, and it won’t be my last.”

At the Therapy Dog Ambassador Team booth, crowds gathered to pet Therapy Dogs, who greeted visitors with wagging tails and a calming presence. It was a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the event, offering a chance to connect with these loving animals. And it was the one place where you could sit with a precious dog in your lap!
The vendor area was lively, offering everything from gourmet dog treats to handcrafted leashes and breed-specific merchandise. Many spectators couldn’t resist picking up a souvenir, while others grabbed a warm drink to enjoy as they took in the sights and sounds of the show. “The energy here is great,” said Meg Begany. “There’s so much to see and do. My kids and I already bought a bandana for our dog at home and are sticking around for the Best in Show competition.”

The National Dog Show weekend is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of the bond between dogs and their owners. Whether they were cheering for their favorite breed or simply enjoying the lively atmosphere, attendees were united by their shared love for dogs. This sense of unity and community was palpable, as Barbara Dove summed it up, “It’s not just about the dogs. It’s about the connection people have with them. You can’t count the number of smiles in this place.”
As the event came to a close, the excitement for the upcoming broadcast on NBC Thanksgiving Day was already building. For the thousands of people who attended, the National Dog Show was a truly unforgettable experience—a celebration of both the dogs we love and the people who share that passion. With the National Dog Show Presented by Purina set to air at noon on Thanksgiving Day, spectators couldn’t wait to relive the excitement and share their experience with friends and family in front of the TV.
