Interview with Shilon Bedford – 2024 National Dog Show Breed Judge
1. What does it mean to be invited to judge at this year’s National Dog Show Presented by Purina?
Shilon Bedford: Always delighted to be invited to judge a show, but an invitation to judge the Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s National Dog Show is certainly special. I had never attended this event and it did not disappoint. Great hospitality and great dogs. The KCP, Purina, and NBC put on a well-coordinated and special event.
2. Can you share your thoughts on your various Breed Assignments?
Shilon Bedford: I judged several of the Working breeds and found the quality to be excellent. I was especially impressed with the Great Dane entry. I awarded Best of Breed to a dog of excellent breed type and clean, strong movement. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs also gave me an entry that provided a strong, well-built dog for Best of Breed. My day ended with a beautiful entry of Boxers. I love judging this breed and found a bitch that hit the mark. She had a well-proportioned headpiece and used her square body well.
3. Now that it’s nearly over, what are your thoughts on the 2024 year? Any thoughts on the year ahead?
Shilon Bedford: 2024 has been a great year for our sport. We are building back from the COVID years, and most shows I attended have seen an increase in entries, and with that, more quality dogs in our rings. I am definitely looking forward to 2025.
