Meet Joan Savage – 2024 AKC National Championship Breed Judge

English Cocker Spaniels, English Setters, Flat-Coated Retrievers, Gordon Setters, Irish Setters, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, Sussex Spaniels

1. What does it mean to be invited to judge at the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin, the only all-breed show organized directly by the American Kennel Club?

Joan Savage: It is such an honor and thrill to judge at the AKC National Championship Presented by Royal Canin. The collection of exhibits is always top-notch. To see the best representatives from all over in your ring is awesome! Such a treat to go over them, sort them, and let the handlers really show their dogs. The cream rises to the top.

2. Can you share your thoughts on your various Breed assignments? Please be specific.

Joan Savage: I had large entries in Tollers, English Cockers, Gordon, Irish, and English Setters, and Flat-Coated Retrievers. The Tollers were strong, with correct proportions, and showed with enthusiasm with their tails flagging. Love the setters, my heart dogs. Such depth of quality. Really liked my Best of Breed dogs, especially the Gordon who went on to win the Sporting Group. The English Cockers were lovely, with melting expressions. The Flat-Coated Retrievers had the correct silhouette and heads. A pleasure to put my hands on.

3. Now that it’s over, what are your thoughts on the 2024 show year? Any thoughts on the year ahead?

Joan Savage: The 2024 show year had a lot of really good dogs, which sets up 2025 to be strong as well. Thanks for the opportunity
to respond.
