Insights From Tammy K. Jackson – 2025 WKC Dog Show Breed Judge
What does it mean to you personally to be invited to judge at this year’s historic Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show?
Tammy K. Jackson: Receiving the invitation to judge five Toy breeds at the February 2025 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was both an honor and a surprise. This prestigious event not only showcases the finest dogs but also highlights the dedication and passion that exhibitors, breeders, owners, and the WKC staff and members invest in their canine companions and this incredible event. Although I have only two minutes to evaluate each dog, I strive to make those moments meaningful and respectful. The shared love for dogs among everyone involved creates a unique and warm atmosphere. Judging at the oldest kennel club in the US, surrounded by top dogs from around the world, is a privilege I deeply cherish. While nerves are natural in such a high-stakes environment, the graciousness of the exhibitors transforms the experience into something truly rewarding.
Can you share a few comments on your various Breed assignments? Please be specific.
Tammy K. Jackson: I had the privilege of judging several outstanding breeds, including Pugs, Pekingese, Papillons, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and Russian Toys. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel entries particularly impressed me with their beautiful heads and correct expressions, and correct side movement that conveyed their breed’s charm. The competition among the Pugs was fierce, with exceptional entries that made for a challenging yet fulfilling experience. The Papillons delighted me with their stunning profiles, graceful movement, and adherence to the Breed Standard. Coming from a background with coated breeds, I found the Pekingese to be exquisite, showcasing remarkable headpieces and correct movement that truly stood out. While the entry of Russian Toys was smaller, their breed type and characteristics were impressive, proving that quality often outweighs quantity. Each dog I judged represented the pinnacle of their breed, making this experience even more special.
What are your thoughts on the 2024/25 show years? On the months and year ahead?
Tammy K. Jackson: The Westminster Kennel Club consistently puts on an exceptional show, and returning to New York City added a magical element to the experience. Stepping into the judging center, the striking green carpet, with purple and gold trim, made it clear that this was no ordinary dog show. The organization, hospitality, and attention to detail were remarkable, allowing me to focus entirely on the honor of judging these incredible breeds. The entire experience was not only magical but also humbling—a highlight of my life. I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity and wish to thank everyone involved for making it so special.
Looking ahead to the 2025 show year, I see the dog show community evolving and expanding while remaining true to our breeds’ functionality and purpose. This blend of tradition and innovation is crucial for our continued success. I eagerly anticipate what this year will hold and how we can further enhance the dog show experience for everyone involved.
