Interview with Theresa Connors, Breeder of ConnQuest Dobermans
- Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Where do you live? How many years in dogs? How many years as a breeder? What is your kennel name?
- What are the hallmarks of your breed and why are they important for maintaining breed type?
- In your opinion, are there enough puppy homes to support breeding a litter this year?
- How have you implemented new technologies in science and communications as a breeder?
- In your community, have you noticed a change in the public’s perception of purebred dogs?
- Have you noticed any trends in the sport? Anything to be concerned about?
- What are some of the positive changes you’ve seen in the sport in recent years?
Theresa Connors
1. I live Newtonville, Ontario, Canada. I’ve been in dogs for 34 years and been a breeder for 13 years. My kennel name is ConnQuest Dobermans.
2. Dobermans have the “Look of Eagles.” This can only be preserved with a cropped ear and docked tail. They are proud of carriage and a one-piece dog.
3. Yes. I could easily have sold 3-4 litters, but I only have time to whelp just one.
4. We are able to test for much more than when I started out. Social media has really changed how we advertise puppies and dogs.
5. Here in Canada, we have a doodle everything! There are more cross-bred dogs than purebreds. Particularly, the public is often “offended” by a cropped ear when it’s posted.
6. Most folks are getting older. That’s concerning.
7. Our national club is trying to be more inclusive and they encourage mentoring for new breeders.
