A Word or Two from AKC President & CEO Gina DiNardo
In my new role as President and CEO, it is my pleasure to share the exciting work happening across the American Kennel Club (AKC). Each month, I will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the programs, events, and accomplishments we’re proud to celebrate with our community.
Let’s kick things off with something creative and fun. We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our second National Art Contest, presented by AKC Public Education. This year’s theme is “Dog Shows,” inviting young artists ages 5 to 18 to showcase their creativity through drawings, paintings, or mixed media. Artwork will be judged in four age groups based on creativity, alignment with the theme, and overall presentation. Finalists and winners will be honored in an online exhibition, with winning pieces displayed at the AKC Museum of the Dog in New York City. Entries are now open and will close on September 29, 2025, at 11:59 PM EST. We can’t wait to celebrate the next generation of dog lovers through their art.
Earlier this month, we proudly partnered with the U.S. Army to present AKC Salutes the Troops, a high-energy, dog-sport-filled weekend at Fort Stewart in Hinesville, Georgia, and Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia. This was the very first time the AKC hosted an event on a military installation, and we are incredibly proud! Events of the weekend included the AKC Fastest Dog USA, AKC Agility Premier Cup, and the AKC Diving Dogs Challenge. More than a showcase of canine athleticism, this event honored the Army’s 250th anniversary and the extraordinary service of the men, women, and dogs who protect our nation. These events were filmed by AKC as part of the AKC on ESPN sport series, which will air on the following dates:
- AKC Fastest Dogs USA—Saturday, June 14, 2025, 1:30PM-3:30PM on ESPN2
- AKC Diving Dogs Challenge—Friday, July 4, 2025, 7PM-9PM on ESPN
- AKC Agility Dogs Premier Cup—Saturday, July 5, 2025, 12PM-2PM on ESPN2
It was an unforgettable weekend filled with pride, patriotism, and connection with our military families.
We’re also pleased to share that the AKC Agility League has wrapped up its ninth season, highlighting the incredible skill and teamwork of competitors nationwide. Ten team champions were named across divisions, including the newest Elementary division for beginner dogs. Notably, this season’s Elementary champions in the Regulation division were all junior handlers – a fantastic reflection of the young talent shaping the future of our sport. As we look ahead, I remain deeply committed to expanding AKC’s mission, celebrating the incredible bond between people and dogs, and creating more opportunities to engage, educate, and inspire. Thank you for your continued support as we shape the next chapter of AKC together.
