Meet Bob Busby – 2025 National Dog Show Working Group Judge
1. Can you describe your reaction to receiving an invitation to judge the Working Group at this year’s National Dog Show Presented by Purina?
Bob Busby: Blessed! Absolutely thrilled. Privileged!
2. What does it mean to judge a Group at this historic show? It’s an honor. It’s bucket list!
Bob Busby: IMO, a dream come true!
3. In your opinion, how does this show differ from other AKC events?
Bob Busby: The Kennel Club of Philadelphia has always been a spectacular event. It’s about the dogs and the people. When I had a break, spectators stopped and asked me questions; it was great to chat with people who had never been to a dog show. When I glanced outside Ring 9 on Saturday, it was four rows deep! The Kennel Club of Philadelphia is one of the premier events in the US.
4. What were you thinking or feeling moments before you stepped into the center of the Group ring?
Bob Busby: I believe in the power of prayer. I was most confident. Each exhibit had a shot. Unfortunately, there are only four Group placements awarded; I could have used eight, easily. Each representative of their breed was most deserving.
5. Was there a heightened energy coming from the dog and handler teams? Did you feel any excitement from the spectators?
Bob Busby: Every handler, every dog, every team, was on their game. The dogs are NOT AT ALL NERVOUS! Handlers are pumped, owners are, in most cases, a complete wreck! OH, YES! The spectators are the best! The dogs definitely feel the energy. We feel the energy! Some dogs received more applause than others, showing crowd favorites.
6. How challenging was this assignment? Can you share your selection process?
Bob Busby: All assignments are challenging to some degree. I prepare by reviewing the Breed Standards, some more than others. The selection process is not difficult. First, breed type, then the Standard (what is correct), then, what is the breed’s purpose? Soundness, balance, effortless free-flowing movement, for all Working breeds.
7. Do you have a word or two about your Group winner? About the dogs that placed?
Bob Busby: Yes! The Working Group winner, IMO, was definitely most deserving. The Giant Schnauzer has excellent breed type; everything about him was correct to the Breed Standard. His movement… spot on! Group 2 (Portuguese Water Dog), Group 3 (Great Dane), and Group 4 (Newfoundland) were also very deserving respectively.
8. This show has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition in America. Are there specific ways in which this show furthers the cause of purebred dogs?
Bob Busby: Absolutely! Families are at home gathered together watching the Kennel Club of Philadelphia; they have the opportunity to see what a real purebred dog looks like.
9. Is there anything you’d like to say to the members of the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and the show’s sponsors?
Bob Busby: From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank Frank DePaulo, his lovely wife, the members of the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, and Purina for a fantastic show.
10. Now that your assignment is complete, what does this show mean to you personally?
Bob Busby: Very happy for the invitation. Thank You!
